Power is distributed from its generation source though the high voltage National Grid that is managed by Transpower; through substations, transformers and medium voltage lines (known as feeders) or cables that are managed by electricity distributors (e.g. PowerNet), to low voltage equipment that connects via a meter to homes and businesses.
Local power distribution cables are available with Copper and Aluminium conductors, solid, stranded or sectorial-shaped in design depending on construction, core number and nominal cross-sectional size. Manufactured with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, they are afforded additional protection by fillers and/or metallic tape and armour, and have either PVC or LSZH oversheaths.
